Getting back to work.... doing what I love!

I had such a happy day at work today. My first trip back out to one of my communities since I had my fall (may 16) and It was fantastic it felt like I was home. It was great to see colleagues and my families that I work with. I had a great driver as I am still not allowed to drive long distances so I had my own personal packhorse and driver today. Lol! I am learning that all that I am learning that all that all of these baby steps are actually big steps. I absolutely love my job it is the best job I have ever had!  What a fantastic and unique experience it has been!

Cat in the hat close up of face painting.

I was so excited about how well the face painting turned out. I had one very cute cool cat on my hands. I find that you can really finish of a costume with a painted face and I think it is easier than it look. I find it hand to have a drawing or  guideline to work from.  I have made a few discoveries about getting better results with facepainting over the years. I am only an amateur face painter and have only ever used the jars of face paints that you can buy in any craft store.So these tips are from an amateur aimed at amateur face painters using "entry level" resources.

I have found that

• good quality fine paintbrushes work really well and allow for fine detail to be painted without fuss. I tried for a while to use cheap brushes but I just couldn't get good results using them.
• A sea sponge makeup sponge is great for painting the background colour. I wet it squeeze it out really well and then put a bit of the background colour on a pallette and mix a bit of water in to thin it out then run the sponge over it, I test it on the back of my hand first then paint the face.
• I always use a plastic pallete and use a palette spatula to get small amounts of paint, i find this heaps easier than working from the jar.

Cat in the Hat for book week dress up day at school.

Ethan wanted to go as the Cat in the Hat for book week dress up day at school. We found the hat spotlight so that was a great starting point. Not wanting to spend a great amount of money on the costume I decided that he could use a pair of black pants that he already had and his black shoes. the pieces i added-

• A black shirt from kmart for $2 (I went with a short sleeve shirt because it is too hot for long sleeved here and you cant get them anyway lol.)  and painted with white paint on the shirt to look like fur.
• A piece of felt from spontlight and cut it into to the bow shape and used a safety pin to attach it to the shirt
• a pair of small cotton gloves from woolworths in the cleaining aisle.
• I painted his face which finished off his costume.

It didn't cost much and looked great and he won best dressed for his class which was exciting. Two of his mates went as Thing One and thing Two and they looked great as well and also won best dressed for their class.

A very bittersweet night last night for me..... I said a very sad goodbye to my mum as she headed back to Brisbane. It has been so great having her here, the amazing support and motherly love has helped me get through the last month. It was really hard to let her go ( yes i cried like a baby at the airport) but the sweet part was that my gorgeous niece Emily came up from Brisbane to spend 3 weeks with us. :)

We are back from Darwin. My fracture clinic appointment/ follow up didn't quite go as hoped. My right wrist is healing well and the surgeon is happy with the progress however my left wrist is a different story. An xray and ct scan revealed that the bone hasn't healed well and there was concern about the stability of the bone graft and plate as one of the screws is sitting very close to the joint which isnt ideal. The decisions made to put another cast on for 4 more weeks with a review again then. If it hasnt healed then i guess it is back into surgery for me. I was feeling pretty down yesterday and the worryingbthing is that my left hand is my dominant hand. The positive is that we can still go on our planned road trip as the surgeon gave the go ahead which is a good thing. Just trying take each day as it comes.
